Dexa  -   Bone Densitometry
Dexa Scans  are  performed to evaluate a person's bone density and to determine if you have osteoporosis, an abnormally low bone density which increases your risk of fractures.

It is a safe exam requiring a tiny dose of radiation.
A typical exam takes 5-15 minutes and does not require you to remove your clothes.

You will be asked to lie on a table  as you see in the picture to the left. There is no pain or discomfort.

The goal of DEXA is to identify people at risk for osteoporosis.  With early treatment  bone loss can be decreased, hopefully reducing the risk of painful debilitating fractures.

Note the spine collapse in the picture to the right.

Bone mass increases from birth until approximately age 30 and then steadily declines, particularly in women post menopause
